GNP was formed in 2006 to pursue operations on the Eastside Rail Corridor. In 2008,
GNP was given authority as a federal railroad by the Surface Transportation Board, which gives it direct access to low interest federal loans for rail projects.
GNP also received a NEPA categorical exclusion for works throughout the entire corridor. In September 2008, BNSF and the Port of Seattle selected
GNP as the third-party operator for freight. In December 2009,
GNP purchased a permanent freight easement from BNSF for the north portion of the line from Woodinville to Snohomish. Freight operations began in January 2010.
